The study, conducted by the Japanese food company Kenjiroshi in collaboration with Tohoku University, focused on a type of mustard oil called hexarapan, found in small quantities in wasabi root, according to the Kyodo News agency.

The study investigated whether the compound—already known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects—could positively impact the cognitive function of healthy adults aged 60 and older.

The trial involved 72 healthy adults aged 60 to 80, divided into two groups. One group received 0.8 milligrams of hexarapan daily as a supplement, equivalent to 5 grams of wasabi root, for 12 weeks, while the other group received a placebo.

Post-trial tests showed that the group that took the supplements showed a marked improvement in their episodic and working memory compared to the group that took the placebo.
