The Harmful Effects of Sugar Consumption on the Body
Sugars are among the nutrients that doctors advise limiting as much as possible due to their negative impact on weight gain and numerous other diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Some recent studies indicate that sugars, not salt as previously thought, are the primary enemy of the heart. They lead to serious illnesses like high blood pressure and atherosclerosis, not to mention weight gain.
Business Insider presents a list of negative effects on the body resulting from excessive sugar consumption, which should make us think twice before indulging.
1- Tooth Decay
The bacteria that cause tooth decay feed on simple sugars. Additionally, sugars produce an acid that erodes tooth enamel. This is why dentists consistently recommend limiting sweets and sugary foods, especially for children.
2- Reduced Satiety
The body produces the hormone leptin, which signals satiety. Studies conducted on mice indicate that excessive sugar consumption reduces the body's sensitivity to this hormone, leading to the consumption of large quantities of food without feeling full.
3. Weight Gain
Many people turn to sweets and sugary foods when they feel hungry. These foods provide the body with large amounts of calories without providing the desired feeling of satiety, leading to unwanted weight gain.
4. Insulin Resistance
When large amounts of sugar are consumed, the body's need for insulin increases. Insulin is the hormone that helps the body convert food into usable energy. When insulin levels are consistently high, the body's sensitivity to insulin decreases, causing sugar to accumulate in the blood and eventually leading to diabetes.
5. Diabetes
Between 1988 and 2008, the prevalence of diabetes in the United States increased by 128%. The disease currently affects 25 million people, or 8.3% of the population. Studies have found an increased risk of developing this disease among people who consume large amounts of sweets and processed drinks.
6. Liver Failure
Increased fructose metabolism puts significant strain on the liver, which can lead to inflammation. High doses of sugar can cause even more serious damage, including liver failure.
7. Pancreatic Cancer
Numerous studies have linked high-sugar diets to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. This is explained by the fact that sugars contribute to various diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, both of which are major risk factors for pancreatic cancer.
8. Kidney Disease
A study of 9,358 adults in the United States indicated that consuming sugary soft drinks can lead to kidney disease and inflammation, ultimately resulting in kidney failure.
9. High Blood Pressure
While high blood pressure is often associated with salt intake, recent studies have revealed that sugars pose an even greater risk of hypertension. Researchers believe this is due to the formation of uric acid following increased sugar consumption.
10- Cognitive decline
The effect of sugars is not limited to physical health aspects, but also extends to mental and psychological aspects, as many studies have shown that increased consumption of sugary substances affects cognitive skills and memory, and accelerates the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
