ChatGPT, the OpenAI chatbot, was briefly down for thousands of users in the United States on Feb. 3, according to outage data.
The tracking website Downdetector showed a spike in issue reports at around 3:20 p.m. ET, hitting a peak of over 13,000 compared to a baseline of 19. Reports on the site fell to 3,722 just before 4 p.m. ET and fell under 1,000 reports just after. As of 6:30 p.m. ET, Downdetector shows less than 100 outage reports for the chatbot.
The site tracks outages by aggregating user-submitted reports from multiple sources. The actual number of affected users may differ from what's shown on Downdetector as these reports are user-submitted.
OpenAI said on its status page that it had applied the "necessary mitigations," and the page shows ChatGPT as "operational" as of 6:30 p.m. ET.
