Rice water has been a hot topic in the beauty world lately. We previously mentioned that using rice water on hair helps it grow faster and adds shine. But the benefits of rice water aren't limited to hair; it's said to work wonders on the skin too. Easily prepared at home, rice water is among the leading applications in natural skincare routines these days. Containing amino acids, vitamins, and minerals known to protect and repair the skin, rice water is also an indispensable part of Japanese and Korean skincare routines.
Benefits of rice water for the skin
It can brighten the skin: Rice water, which is quite effective in keeping the skin clean and radiant, can also help to even out skin tone and brighten the complexion. It should be noted that this conclusion is based entirely on user experience and is not supported by any scientific studies.
It has anti-aging effects: Rice water is rich in amino acids, antioxidants, and minerals that can reduce or slow the skin's aging process. It can help maintain skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of signs of aging. (*) Some studies also suggest that fermented rice water helps increase collagen levels in the skin. (*)
Strengthens the skin barrier: The outermost layer of skin helps prevent dryness and acts as a barrier against various skin problems. Various external factors, diet, and even insufficient sleep can cause problems in this outer layer of skin. The starch in rice can help naturally protect the skin barrier.
Reduces sunburn and irritation: Sun damage such as sunburn, inflammation, redness, and itching can be relieved by applying rice starch water. The cooling effect can soothe sunburned skin. Furthermore, one study showed that chemicals in rice help protect the skin from sun rays. (*)
It can reduce oiliness: Oily skin occurs when the skin produces too much sebum due to various factors. These factors vary greatly, from genetics and diet to the incorrect use of skincare products and skin pollution. Rinsing with rice water reduces this oiliness, acting as a pore-cleansing mask and helping to prevent skin problems associated with oiliness.
Rice water may be beneficial for acne, redness, and inflammation: Many people who use rice water claim that applying it soothes the skin, clears blemishes caused by skin conditions like eczema, and helps them heal.
How is rice water used on the skin?
There are several different ways to prepare rice water. The most important step is to thoroughly wash the rice to remove all dust. To do this, you need to rinse the rice several times.
Boil
Wash the rice thoroughly and drain it. Use about four times the amount of water as rice. Mix the rice and water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat and press down on the rice with a spoon to release the beneficial chemicals. Then strain and separate the water. Store the water in an airtight container for up to a week. Dilute with plain water before use.
Wet
You can also make rice water by soaking rice in water. After thoroughly washing the rice, soak it in 3-4 times the amount of hot water for at least 30 minutes. Then, using a spoon, press down on the rice grains and mix well. Drain the water and let it cool.
To ferment
At this point, start by following the steps in the rice soaking recipe. Wash the rice and soak it in 3-4 times its volume of hot water. After draining the rice, let it sit at room temperature for 1-2 days. At this point, the rice water will need to sour. Once you smell the sour aroma, you can store it in the refrigerator. Don't forget to dilute it with a little water before using.
You can use this prepared water as a toner, or you can add it to your homemade face mask.
Important note: Never use if you are allergic to this product. If it causes redness, itching, or other skin irritations, discontinue use.
