Dr. Osama Hamdy, a professor of diabetes at Harvard University, emphasized that insulin is a matter of life or death for diabetics, and they cannot do without it, especially those with type 1 diabetes.
The Harvard professor added, "The lives of type 1 diabetics depend entirely on insulin." He continued, "If a type 1 diabetic goes several days without insulin, or even just one day, they could fall into a diabetic coma, which can be fatal."
He pointed out that in emergencies and crises, such as the situation in Gaza, diabetics are given at least one type of insulin (long-acting).
According to Healthline, low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, can lead to loss of consciousness if the brain does not receive enough glucose to function.
High blood sugar can usually be prevented from progressing to a diabetic coma. If a diabetic coma does occur, a doctor can likely stabilize blood glucose levels and restore consciousness quickly.
A diabetic coma can also occur in cases of diabetic ketoacidosis, a buildup of chemicals called ketones in the blood.
A Harvard University professor of diabetes denied the existence of scientific evidence for alternative prescriptions or herbs that could benefit diabetics, adding, "Everything said about this is simply quackery, aimed at making money by exploiting patients' needs."
